Summer sailing trip Day 10: Newcastle to Lake Macquarie

4 January 2021: Woke up to a lovely and sunny day and had breakfast onboard. Looking at weather forecasts and predictions we decided to do Swansea and Lake Macquarie today. This is just a short trip of 12 nm. We went for a walk into Newcastle to get some provisions before we headed off south again.

Leaving New Castle

The trip out of the entrance was a lot smoother today with the tide coming in with the waves. Very little wind from NE so we motored with the main sail up for stability from the NE swell. Had a lovely run south.

Navigated the Swansea channel through beautiful clear waters and waited outside the Swansea bridge for opening time. It was a tight navigation through and after the bridge to get into Lake Macquarie. As our draft is only 1. 4m we were able to get through.

Went to LMYC and stayed at their dock for the night. As we prepared for dinner a large thunderstorm arrived from the south. It came with lots of wind and rain and we were happy to be in they marina. As the plan had been to go straight to Sydney we are very happy to have cancelled this as most of the lightning strikes happened at sea just where we would have been.
